We need your help: Student-Athlete Transportation Issue

Seattle Public Schools’ high school student-athletes currently have to leave school at 1pm for ‘away’ events that start at 4pm (at the earliest) because the SPS transportation plan cannot provide busing at a reasonable time. This means students — nearly 2,600 students each quarter — are missing lunch, 5th and 6th periods, which is detrimental for our students’ education and their teachers’ workload. Spring sports often have 3 games a week, which would result in students missing 20% of their classes each week. Free and reduced lunch kids wouldn’t get lunch.

The West Seattle Booster Club invites you to join us in taking our concerns to the Seattle School Board. We are inviting families, staff, PTSA, Booster Clubs, and community members from all of the Seattle High Schools to join our efforts.

We want SPS to implement one of the following solutions:

• SPS provides alternative bus transportation and pays the difference in price
• SPS acquires more yellow school buses for our use
• SPS allows schools to use other vendors for transportation

Here’s what you can do to help:

  • Print out and gather signatures on the petition, which you can download HERE. Send it back to West Seattle High School via kidmail or scan and send it to westseattleboosterclub@gmail.com by Sunday, October 9th.
  • Plan to attend the school board meeting on Wednesday, October 12th (2445 3rd Ave S, Seattle, 98134) from 4:15 – 9pm.
  • Sign up to provide public testimony (2 minutes max) at the meeting. Sign-ups start Monday 10/10 at 8 am at boardagenda@seattleschools.org. For more information regarding the rules for applying and providing public testimony, reference this document. Please email us at westseattleboosterclub@gmail.com if you are granted an opportunity to provide testimony.
  • Bring families, friends, students, staff and community members to maximize our presence.
